If you've ever opened your Bible, stared at the pages for a moment, and wondered, "Where do I even begin?"—you're not alone.
Maybe you've tried reading through the Bible before but stopped somewhere around Leviticus.
Maybe you've bought a devotional with the best intentions, only to find it collecting dust on the shelf.
Or maybe life simply feels too full. Between caring for your family, homeschooling, keeping up with the house, work, and everything else on your plate, it can feel like there's never enough time to sit down and study God's Word.
Friend, can I encourage you with something?
Bible study isn't about checking off another task on your to-do list. It's about getting to know the God who loves you.
And that changes everything.
Why Bible Study Matters
As moms, we spend so much of our day pouring into everyone else.
We answer questions.
We solve problems.
We wipe tears.
We make meals.
We teach lessons.
We encourage little hearts.
But if we're constantly pouring out without allowing God to pour into us, it's easy to become spiritually exhausted.
God never intended for us to live on yesterday's encouragement.
His Word is our daily bread.
When we open our Bible, we're not simply reading an ancient book—we're hearing from the living God.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 reminds us that all Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, correcting, and training us so that we may be equipped for every good work.
That includes motherhood.
That includes homeschooling.
That includes the ordinary moments no one else sees.
You Don't Have to Know Everything
One of the biggest misconceptions about Bible study is believing you need to understand everything before you begin.
You don't.
In fact, none of us ever "graduates" from learning God's Word.
Even passages you've read dozens of times can speak to your heart in a fresh way because God continues to shape us as we grow.
Come to Scripture with humility, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
Ask questions.
Take notes.
Look up unfamiliar words.
Pray before you read.
Remember that you're not trying to become a Bible scholar overnight. You're simply spending time with your Heavenly Father.
Start with One Book of the Bible
It's tempting to jump around from one topic to another, but one of the best ways to grow in your understanding of Scripture is to read one book at a time.
If you're just getting started, consider reading:
John to learn about the life and ministry of Jesus.
James for practical wisdom on living out your faith.
Philippians for encouragement and joy.
Psalms for prayer, worship, and comfort.
Proverbs for everyday wisdom.
Reading through an entire book helps you understand the context rather than focusing on isolated verses.
Ask Simple Questions as You Read
Bible study doesn't have to be complicated.
As you read, ask yourself:
What does this passage teach me about God?
What does it reveal about people?
Is there a command to obey?
Is there a promise to remember?
Is there an example to follow—or avoid?
How can I apply this today?
Sometimes one verse is enough to carry with you throughout the day.
Don't rush past it.
Keep a Simple Bible Study Journal
You don't need expensive supplies or perfectly designed pages.
A simple notebook is enough.
Write down:
The date.
The passage you read.
One truth that stood out.
One prayer.
One practical application.
Over time, you'll have a beautiful record of how God has been teaching and growing you.
When Life Interrupts Your Plans
Let's be honest—motherhood is full of interruptions.
Some mornings your Bible study will be peaceful.
Other mornings you'll read one paragraph before someone needs help with math, breakfast burns, or the baby wakes up early.
That doesn't mean you've failed.
God isn't grading your quiet time.
He delights in your desire to know Him, even when your day doesn't go as planned.
Don't let one missed day become one missed week.
His invitation is always open.
Study the Bible with Your Children
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is allowing them to see us delight in God's Word.
You don't have to hide your Bible study until the house is perfectly quiet.
Invite them into it.
Read a passage together.
Talk about what you're learning.
Pray together.
Answer their questions.
Your children may not remember every lesson you teach, but they'll remember watching you treasure Scripture.
Those moments become part of the spiritual legacy you're building in your home.
Practical Tips for Staying Consistent
Consistency isn't about perfection—it's about creating simple habits that keep drawing you back to God's Word.
Here are a few ideas:
Keep your Bible somewhere you'll see it every day.
Choose a realistic time instead of waiting for the "perfect" moment.
Begin with 10–15 minutes if that's all your schedule allows.
Pray before you read, asking God to help you understand His Word.
Don't worry about how much you read. Focus on what God is teaching you.
Give yourself grace during busy seasons.
Remember, faithfulness grows through small, daily steps.
The Goal Isn't to Finish the Bible, It's to Be Changed by It
It's wonderful to read through the entire Bible.
But the real goal isn't simply finishing a reading plan.
The goal is allowing God's Word to shape your heart.
As you spend time in Scripture, you'll begin to notice subtle changes.
You'll respond with more patience.
You'll worry a little less.
You'll trust God a little more.
You'll find hope in difficult seasons.
His Word transforms us from the inside out.
As Romans 12:2 reminds us, we're transformed by the renewing of our minds.
That transformation happens one day, one chapter, and sometimes even one verse at a time.
A Prayer
Father,
Thank You for giving us Your Word. Thank You that we don't have to figure out life on our own because You've lovingly provided truth, wisdom, and encouragement through Scripture. Help me make time to meet with You each day—not out of obligation, but out of love. Open my heart to understand Your Word, and help me apply it in my home, my motherhood, and every area of my life. May my children see a genuine love for You reflected in the way I live.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
