Have you ever read a Bible verse that stayed with you long after you closed your Bible?
Maybe it encouraged you during a difficult season.
Maybe it challenged your thinking.
Maybe it reminded you that God was still faithful even when life felt uncertain.
Now imagine slowing down long enough to write that verse, reflect on its meaning, and allow it to settle deep into your heart.
That's the beauty of Scripture journaling.
It isn't about having beautiful handwriting or perfectly decorated notebook pages.
It's about slowing down long enough to listen to what God is teaching you through His Word.
If you've been curious about Scripture journaling but weren't sure where to begin, friend, let's keep it simple.
What Is Scripture Journaling?
Scripture journaling is the practice of intentionally writing God's Word while reflecting on what He's teaching you through it.
Sometimes you'll write an entire passage.
Sometimes it's just one verse.
Sometimes you'll fill a page with thoughts and prayers.
Other days, you'll write one sentence that stays with you throughout the day.
There isn't one "right" way to do it.
The goal isn't creating something beautiful.
The goal is hiding God's Word in your heart.
As the psalmist wrote in Psalms 119:11,
"I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
Scripture journaling is one practical way we can do exactly that.
Why Write Scripture Instead of Just Reading It?
Reading the Bible is essential.
But writing slows us down.
Instead of quickly moving through a chapter, journaling encourages us to linger over a verse.
We notice words we may have skipped.
We ask better questions.
We begin seeing connections we hadn't noticed before.
Writing Scripture also helps many people remember what they've read because they're engaging both their mind and their hands.
It's less about taking notes...
And more about allowing God's truth to take root.
You Don't Need Fancy Supplies
One of the biggest myths about Scripture journaling is that you need expensive notebooks, colorful pens, stickers, or artistic talent.
You don't.
All you need is:
A Bible
A notebook
A pen
A willing heart
That's it.
If beautiful journals inspire you, wonderful.
If you're writing in a spiral notebook from the back-to-school aisle, that's wonderful too.
God isn't impressed by fancy supplies.
He's delighted by hearts that seek Him.
A Simple Way to Start
If you're wondering what to write, here's an easy rhythm you can follow each day.
Write the Scripture
Choose one verse or a short passage that stands out during your Bible reading.
Write it slowly.
Don't rush.
Reflect
Ask yourself:
What does this teach me about God?
What does this reveal about my heart?
Is there something I need to obey?
Is there a promise I can trust?
How does this encourage me today?
Respond
Finish by writing a simple prayer.
Talk to God about what you've just read.
Ask Him to help you live it out.
That's Scripture journaling.
Simple.
Intentional.
Life-giving.
Your Journal Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
Can I let you in on a little secret?
Some of the most meaningful journal entries I've ever written were messy.
There were crossed-out words.
Half-finished thoughts.
Tears on the page.
Questions I didn't have answers to.
And yet...
God met me there.
Don't wait until your journal looks Pinterest-worthy before you begin.
Your journal isn't a piece of art.
It's a conversation between you and the Lord.
Involve Your Children
One of the sweetest things about Scripture journaling is that your children can see it.
Imagine sitting at the table with your Bible open while your children color beside you.
They're learning that spending time with God is simply part of everyday life.
As they grow, invite them to write a verse they're memorizing or draw a picture of a Bible story.
These small moments create lasting memories and help establish a Christ-centered atmosphere in your home.
Scripture Journaling During Busy Seasons
Some seasons of motherhood are incredibly full.
You may not have thirty uninterrupted minutes.
That's okay.
Choose one verse.
Write it on an index card.
Copy it into your journal.
Think about it while folding laundry.
Pray through it while washing dishes.
Read it again before bed.
Scripture journaling isn't about how many pages you fill.
It's about allowing God's Word to shape your heart one verse at a time.
Verses to Begin With
If you're not sure where to start, these passages are wonderful places to begin:
Psalm 23
Philippians 4:6–7
Isaiah 41:10
Matthew 11:28–30
Romans 8:28
Proverbs 3:5–6
Each one offers encouragement, hope, and truth that you can return to again and again.
The Goal Isn't a Full Journal, It's a Full Heart
It's easy to become focused on filling pages.
But Scripture journaling isn't about completing a notebook.
It's about allowing God to transform your heart through His Word.
Over time, you'll discover something beautiful.
Your journal becomes more than a collection of verses.
It becomes a testimony.
A record of prayers.
A reminder of God's faithfulness.
A place where you can look back and clearly see how He has been growing you through every season.
Try This Today 🌿
Before you close this article, choose just one verse that encourages you.
Write it in a notebook.
Read it aloud three times.
Pray over it.
Carry it with you throughout the day.
Don't worry about writing pages and pages.
Simply spend a few intentional minutes with the Lord and let His Word settle into your heart.
Sometimes one verse is all God uses to change the direction of an entire day.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of Your Word. Thank You that every page points us to Your love, Your faithfulness, and Your truth. Help me slow down long enough to hear Your voice above the noise of everyday life. As I write Your Word, help it become more than ink on a page. Write it on my heart, shape my thoughts, and transform the way I live. May my children see a genuine love for Scripture reflected in my everyday life, and may our home always be rooted in You.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
