There's something special about summer mornings.
The pace is a little slower.
The alarm clock isn't always rushing everyone out the door.
The sunlight seems to linger just a little longer.
Birds are singing outside the window, and for a brief moment before the day fully begins, everything feels... still.
Of course, if you're a mom, you know that "still" doesn't usually last very long.
Before you know it, someone is asking for breakfast, another child can't find their sandals, and somehow everyone's already talking at the same time.
Sound familiar?
Summer may look different from the school year, but one thing remains the same: we need Jesus just as much today as we did yesterday.
In fact, the slower rhythm of summer can become one of the sweetest opportunities to intentionally draw closer to Him.
Summer Doesn't Have to Mean Spiritually Drifting
Have you ever noticed how easy it is for routines to disappear during the summer?
Bedtimes become more flexible.
Schedules change.
Vacations come and go.
Days blend together.
While there's nothing wrong with enjoying a slower pace, it's also easy for our spiritual habits to quietly fade into the background.
Before we know it, weeks have gone by and we've barely opened our Bible.
Friend, don't let guilt settle into your heart.
Instead, see summer as a fresh invitation.
Not to do more.
But to simply spend time with the One who loves you.
Begin with Gratitude Before You Reach for Your Phone
It's so tempting to grab our phones the moment we wake up.
Notifications.
Emails.
Social media.
The news.
Within minutes, our minds are already carrying the weight of the world.
What if, instead, we started the day by acknowledging the One who gave us another day to live?
Before your feet even touch the floor, whisper a simple prayer.
"Thank You, Lord, for this new day."
It doesn't have to be eloquent.
It just has to be sincere.
As Psalms 118:24 reminds us,
"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."
Let Nature Point You to the Creator
One of my favorite parts of summer is simply stepping outside.
The warmth of the morning sun.
The sound of birds singing.
A gentle breeze.
The beauty of flowers in bloom.
Creation has a wonderful way of reminding us of God's faithfulness.
Take your coffee outside.
Sit on the porch for a few minutes.
Watch the sunrise if you're able.
Allow God's creation to shift your focus from everything waiting on your to-do list to the Creator who holds it all together.
Keep Your Morning Prayer Simple
Sometimes we overcomplicate prayer.
We think we need the perfect words.
The perfect setting.
The perfect amount of time.
But prayer is simply a conversation with your Heavenly Father.
Tell Him what's on your heart.
Thank Him.
Confess your worries.
Pray for your children by name.
Pray for your marriage.
Pray over your homeschool plans for the coming school year.
Ask Him for wisdom.
Ask Him for patience.
Ask Him to help you love well today.
He delights in hearing the honest prayers of His children.
Pray Through Scripture
If you ever struggle knowing what to pray, let Scripture guide you.
Read a verse.
Pause.
Turn it into a prayer.
For example, when reading Proverbs 3:5–6, you might pray:
"Lord, help me trust You with my whole heart today. When I don't understand what's ahead, remind me that You are directing my path."
Simple.
Personal.
Powerful.
Include Your Children
Summer offers beautiful opportunities to invite your children into your prayer life.
Pray together before heading outside.
Pray before swimming.
Pray before road trips.
Pray while taking a nature walk.
Pray before bedtime.
These don't have to be long prayers.
They simply teach our children that talking to God is part of everyday life—not just something we do at church.
Let Summer Prepare Your Heart for the School Year
For homeschooling families, summer often becomes a season of planning.
Curriculum decisions.
Supply shopping.
Organizing lessons.
Preparing schedules.
Instead of carrying those decisions alone, bring them before the Lord.
Ask Him for wisdom.
Ask Him to guide your plans.
Remember that the goal of homeschooling isn't simply academic success.
It's discipling hearts.
Prayer is one of the most important ways we prepare for that calling.
It's Okay If Every Morning Doesn't Go as Planned
Some mornings will be peaceful.
Others...
Not so much.
The toddler wakes up early.
Someone spills juice.
The dog gets sick.
Plans change.
Don't believe the lie that a chaotic morning means you've missed your chance to meet with God.
He's present in the peaceful mornings.
He's present in the chaotic ones too.
His presence isn't limited by your schedule.
The Most Beautiful Summer Habit
When summer comes to an end, the tan lines will fade.
The vacations will become memories.
The pool toys will be packed away.
The calendars will fill up again.
But time spent with God?
That never fades.
Every prayer.
Every verse.
Every quiet conversation with your Heavenly Father is preparing your heart for whatever season comes next.
There is no better investment you can make this summer than growing closer to Jesus.
Try This Today 🌿
Tomorrow morning, before you check your phone or begin your to-do list, step outside for just five minutes.
Take a deep breath.
Thank God for three specific blessings.
Read one verse.
Pray one honest prayer.
Then carry that verse with you throughout the day.
Sometimes the sweetest moments with God begin with nothing more than five quiet minutes and a willing heart.
A Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of a new day and for the beauty that surrounds us each summer morning. Help me slow down long enough to notice Your presence and remember Your goodness. Teach me to begin each day by seeking You before the distractions of life take over. Fill my home with peace, my heart with gratitude, and my family with a growing love for You. As we enjoy this season together, may it also become a season of spiritual growth that prepares us for whatever lies ahead.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
